Chapter 7

Geoffrey

I really hoped I wasn't pestering him too much at work. I didn't even mind the weird looks we were getting from spending so much time together in the break room. I watched Eric eat, making sure he was getting the necessary nutrients to his body, as well as taking his prenatal everyday during his lunch break. Already I could see his stomach growing larger.

Or maybe it was my imagination.

"So what about the others that live in the city?" he asked, chewing on the sandwich I'd made for him.

"There's just a handful, actually. Most of them live in the woods, or the small towns just outside of Worj."

"Worj is already a small town, how much smaller can you get?" He smiled, finishing off the rest of his food.

"Trust me, there are little communities with about fifty to a hundred in them. Not all of them are vampires, but the majority are."

"Thinking about that is crazy. Right outside of town, there's vampires all over the place. It's crazy."

I shrugged, leaning back in my seat and glancing at my wristwatch. "It is. It's crazier to think that it's almost time to go back to work."

"No, it's sweet that you care. I just don't want to rush things, like I said."

"I know, I know. Be sure to tell me, though, if you need anything."

"Sure thing." He winked, getting up from his seat to toss his trash away as I walked out of the room. I realized I was acting a little extra with the situation. He wasn't my husband, wasn't even officially my boyfriend. And I’d technically just gotten out of a relationship. But I didn't want to let this go or let this slip away. I didn't want to hold back my feelings—although I also didn't want to make Eric uncomfortable.

I cleared my throat, smiling as another nurse walked up to me and passed me a clipboard.

"What's this?"

"The charts for the patient that's waiting on you. You're usually so on top of things, Geoffrey."

"Are you lecturing me?" I smirked at her.

She winked in reply, turning away to head back to wherever she was going next.

"Keep your mind focused on work until you get home, Doc."

I rolled my eyes, following the board to the exam room I was to go to next. I carried out the remainder of the workday, just going about the routine of caring for different patients. I was checking on a few pregnancies, mostly regular check-ups. It wasn't long until the day had come and gone.

As it usually happened, I was the last to leave. I was careful to lock down the
